Tonke Tea

Tonke is a German neologism which is a neutral term for aunt (Tante)/ uncle (Onkel). When I changed my name to be in line with my biggest passion in life, my nephews started calling me Tonke Tea. And in a way it gave me just the little push I needed to finally start a tea business.

Actually a trained linguist and vegan chef during the day, I've been passionate about tea for almost two decades now. My first introduction to Chinese oolong was through an exchange student from Hong Kong who lived with my family for 10 months when I was in my last year of high school. Ever since those first nightly yum cha sessions, I've lived in China and Taiwan to live and learn language, tea, and culture, dabbled into the Japanese Chado according to the Urasenke school, and started to make my own tea ceramics.
